SAM is a very critical equipment in modern Missile system. SAM’s primary purpose is to ensure that the safety of the missile launching aircraft/system/personal such that the missile does not become ‘ARMED’ immediately after launching but after achieving a certain ‘safe’ distance – from the launcher system. This system monitors several critical hardware signals in real time and such as acceleration, safety latches etc. and enables the missile detonation mechanism after ensuring that the missile is completely detached to the launcher system, and gone to a safe distance from the launcher. If the SAM fails to operate properly this could arm the missile early which will be fatal to the launching aircraft/system/personal or in the other case the missile fails to arm thus defeat the whole purpose of the attack.
This is similar to a traditional land mine except this will operate electronically. This is a Electronic 3d accelerometer based motion sensor technology. They are also expected to self-deactivate according to UNO rules of land mines after the specific active time in the field to prevent after war fatalities.
